Grab your backpacks and get ready to head out on some epic solo female hiking trips next year! I know that the Summer has only just arrived, but there’s no harm in a little forward-thinking, is there? I think not!

Besides, some of these adventurous trails require a little planning to get to and through, so you’re welcome in that regard.

In this month’s blog, your favorite Bag Lady (that’s me!) is back with some SHE-mazing hiking trails perfect for solo travelers. But before we start globetrotting in print, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the most common question of all: Is solo hiking as a female safe?

Of course, it is! But to be thorough, let’s navigate our way through a few relevant safety tips for solo hiking.

It’s hard to know what to expect on your first solo hike, but you can come as prepared as possible for the unexpected. Here are some general tips for solo hiking:

  • Plan and Research

Know the trail, its difficulty, length, and current weather conditions. There are plenty of resources like AllTrails that can assist you with this. And always Inform someone about your plans and expected return time.

Let someone know where you’re going or plan to be by a certain time so they can alert the necessary authorities should they fail to hear from you. Carry a fully charged phone and a (solar) portable charger. In remote areas, a satellite phone or personal locator beacon can be invaluable, too.

  • Navigation Tools

These can easily be adapted into your day pack or emergency travel first aid kit. But I recommended always carrying a map, compass, or GPS device, and knowing how to use them BEFORE you head out on the trail.

  • First Aid Kit

Always carry a basic first aid kit tailored to your medical needs and the environment. This means including things like iodine and charcoal pills – each having their own life-saving qualities. Keep this ER kit well stocked with extra or solar-powered battery packs.

  • Emergency Essentials

Always include a whistle, a small mirror, and a multi-tool in your pack. Bring more water than you think you’ll need and for long-distance hiking, carry a foldable water pouch to fill (the iodine pills in your ER kit will help you here) along the way if needed.

Need more guidance on what to include in your solo traveler’s first aid kit? Let me know if a detailed E-book would help you in the comments and I might consider fashioning one soon!

Avid solo adventurer tip: Try connecting with other solo female hikers. You can do this by seeking out solo hiking forums for women on social networks, or try searching Facebook Groups for a few female hiking groups and requesting to join them. Always be careful with whom you choose to connect with in these groups, though, because no one is monitored for mental health issues or criminal backgrounds to participate.

Some of the top hiking trails for solo female travelers have been conquered again and again by fearless females. Of course, as a responsible solo traveler, let’s start things off by mentioning a few eco-friendly hiking tips for solo travelers.

Solo hiking can be super fun and peaceful, but it’s important to be sustainable. Bring reusable water bottles and snacks to avoid litter. Stick to marked trails to protect nature and wildlife. Also, let someone know your safety plans.

Taking care of the environment ensures that beautiful trails stay awesome for everyone to enjoy! Here are my favorite tips:

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, including food scraps. Stick to established trails to minimize impact.
  • Respect the Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance. Do not feed or disturb them.
  • Campsite Etiquette: Use designated campsites, and if camping in the backcountry, follow guidelines for waste disposal and minimal impact.
  • Water Conservation: Use biodegradable soap and avoid contaminating water sources. Avoid single-use plastic containers like the plague.

Remember, solo hiking isn’t just about enjoying nature; it’s also about respecting it. By preparing properly and following these tips, you can enjoy a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible solo hiking adventure in any weather condition.

Europe will be a fantastic destination for solo female hikers in 2025 because it offers a mix of breathtaking landscapes and safe, well-marked paths perfect for solo adventurers. Solo hikers in Europe will be surprised to find friendly locals, cozy hostels, and vibrant culture in every country. Besides, the natural beauty and charm make it an unforgettable experience.

Pack your (virtual) hiking boots, grab a map, and start dropping pins at these incredible solo hiking destinations in Europe.

4. Spain | The Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. This trail is famous for its well-marked paths with distinctive yellow arrows and scallop shell symbols.

It’s also dotted with albergues (pilgrim hostels), cafes, and rest areas, providing plenty of opportunities to rest, resupply, and meet fellow hikers. That is to say that you do not have to camp for the duration of this journey.

There are plenty of services available along the route, including medical facilities, local police, and support from the local communities, which adds to the safety and comfort of solo travelers. Plus, the Camino attracts people from all over the world, creating a supportive and communal atmosphere.

The most popular route is the Camino Francés, which starts in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France and stretches approximately 800 kilometers to Santiago de Compostela. But for those seeking less strenuous hikes, certain sections of the Camino, such as those through the Meseta (plains) of northern Spain, offer relatively flat and easy walking. While sections through the Pyrenees or Galicia provide more challenging terrain with significant elevation changes, catering to hikers looking for a more physically demanding experience.

But the truth is there are plenty of walkable cities in Spain that cross through the Camino, making it perfect for slow traveling the different regions the trails wind through. Leaving Europe, let’s jet set over to Asia.

Unsurprisingly, some of the best national parks for solo female hikers can be found in the Americas. From the towering Andes in South America to the serene trails of Canada, there’s beauty everywhere.

As a solo female hiker, you’ll find plenty of friendly faces and safe trails, but here are a few I recommend:

1. Belize | Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Imagine yourself surrounded by the lush, vibrant jungle as you hike along well-marked trails of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in Beliz. The symphony of exotic birds and the distant calls of howler monkeys accompany your every step. Pure divinity, no?

Embarking on solo hiking trips can be exhilarating, especially when you’re prepared for varying weather. To be ready to face scorching heat, sudden showers, or chilly winds, proper preparation is key.

From packing lightweight layers to essential gear like sturdy boots and a reliable weather app, readiness ensures a safe and enjoyable adventure. Let’s delve into some solo hiking packing tips for navigating diverse weather conditions on your solo hiking journeys.

  • Pack moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and waterproof outer layers to adapt to changing weather.

  • Choose a comfortable, well-fitted backpack with a rain cover.
  • Carry enough water and a purification method (filter, tablets).

Weather-Specific Tips:

  • Begin your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
  • Take breaks in the shade to prevent heat exhaustion.

I am fortunate to say that I have gone solo hiking in several amazing places around the world.

But, if I am being honest, some of my favorite hiking trips were actually on small group tours. This included hiking to Machu Picchu, the Walk of the Gods into Positano in Italy, and more than a few through the hillsides of the Osogov and Pelister mountain ranges in (North) Macedonia.

Which of these trails entice you?
